Johnson County is geographically isolated in the northeast corner of Tennessee.  Mountain City (population 3,000) is the only town in this rural county and houses the county's only high school (630 students) which includes the vocational school and the only middle school (616 students) within its corporate limits.  Located in various rural communities in the county are 6 elementary schools.

Recent years have seen growth in industry and tourism in the county.  The economy in Johnson County is good and the beautiful mountains make it attractive to people who are trying to escape the busy city life.   Many people are moving to the county for summer and retirement homes.
